Pitaya aka Dragon Fruit in season at Carlsbad Ranch Market
The Pitaya aka dragon fruit is a seasonal fruit that has a skin or rind usually dark red in color. Select ones that are uniformly colored with few spots on it. To determine ripeness, hold fruit in your hand and gently press its skin in order to find one that is hard but moderately soft.
Cut the dragon fruit in half. Scoop out the flesh around the edges with a spoon. Then you can slice or cut the fruit into cubes. The fruit is wonderful to eat by itself or you can use it in smoothies or salads. Just remember, don’t eat the skin.
Health benefits of Pitaya are numerous. Dragon fruit is both low in cholesterol and has little to no unhealthy cholesterol producing fats. The amount of vitamin C in dragon fruit is high. The fruit is also a good natural source of anti-oxidants which help to prevent the dangers of free radicals which can cause cancer and other undesirable health detriments.
Dragon fruit does have a small amount of fats because there are so many seeds in the edible part of the fruit. Additionally, this fruit supplies a good source of dietary fiber.
Pitaya Smoothie suggestion:
½ cup milk
1 teaspoon honey
Cubed dragon fruit
Mix all ingredients & blend. You may add ice cubes to blender if you want. Option to add nuts or dry fruit.
